This diagram shows a woman's body, with an extra layer of fat drawn around it. This is the extra fat that a well-nourished woman builds up during pregnancy. The fat will be used during the first few months of lactation to make breastmilk. A poorly nourished woman builds up a smaller store of fat. Making breastmilk uses about 700 Calories a day. The diagram next to the woman shows that in a well-nourished woman about 200 Calories come from her fat stores, and about 500 Ca...

Sir- Advertising of tobacco products - cigarettes in particular - is one of the most powerful tools in the promotion of their consumption. The international tobacco industry took immediate advantage of Czechoslovakia's moves towards a market economy in 1989: almost overnight, streets across the country were flooded with billboards advertising their products, especially cigarettes.

Whilst I was travelling in western and eastern Africa during the smallpox eradication campaign in the 1970s, I often encountered a patient with a malignant tumour of the jaw in the hospitals which I visited. Later I realised that this was Burkitt's lymphoma, a monoclonal tumour of B cells. Denis Burkitt had travelled extensively in tropical Africa in the early 1950s and had established the entity of this special disease. I have no intention of telling the whole story of ...

I can hardly count how often I have heard honest people declare, in all good faith, that the idea of health for all by the year zooo is not as revolutionary as we pretend. Some of them refer to Article I of the WHO Constitution, which mentions as its sole objective the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health, to justify ironic comments on those who think the ideal of health for all by the year 2000 is revolutionary. According to them, that is a ...

All types of Brucella can infect human beings as well as animals. Generally speaking, Br. melitensis is considered to be the agent responsible for ovine and caprine brucellosis, Br. abortus for bovine brucellosis, and Br. suis for porcine brucellosis. Actually, infection of any species of animal by any type of Brucella is frequent, and one can say, in effect, that the specific relationship of Brucella types to animals does not exactly correspond. This is particularly tru...

Starting in January 1979, several outbreaks of influenza were observed in swine in Belgium (3). The outbreaks w r e characterized by fever, dry cough, and anorexia. The majority of sows and weaned pigs became sick, whereas suckling pigs were not at all or only slightly affected. Mortality was low (less than 1-70) and recovery was uneventful. As described below, influenza virus was isolated from two pigs that died of the disease, and serum specimens were tested from survivors and contact pigs.
