This paper reviews the literature to aqsess the risks and benefits of introducing complementary foods between 4 and 6 months of age to exclusively breast-fed infants living in poverty. Contrary to widely held views that the growth of such infants falters, mean weight gains between I and 6 months of these infants do not differ from breast-fed infants in optimal environments.
