In our opinion, there is a need for a standardized method of evaluating the residual neurovirulence of both commercial poliomyelitis vaccine lots and candidate vaccine strains, since the currently used methods for the assessment of central nervous system (CNS) lesions using a semiquantitative notation (scores or crosses) are not sufficiently objective. It would thus be advisable to supplement them with strictly quantitative morphometry.
