In attempting a topic of such a wide scope in a paper of this length, one must resist the temptation to make oversimplified and over-generalized statements about peoples and nations that are vastly different in social, economic and political developments, not forgetting cultural and geographical variations. In this region, we have countries like Japan which stands amongst the most industrialized and affluent @ nation. in the world. This i's only to be contrasted by other countries where poverty, malnutrition and poor sanitation are ubiquitous. In terms of geographical variations, we have countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, typically compact societies, where the rural boundaries are quickly dwindling and disappearing. Contrast is however found in countries like Indonesia and Thailand where the many rural communities still account for some 80% of the population
