A Working group mccting on the Women, Health and Development (WHD) Country Profilcs was held at the Department of Medical Research, Ministry of Health, in Yangon, Myanmar from 31 March - 4 April 1997. The mccting was attended by 14 participants representing eight of thc Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO), South-East Asia Region (SEAR) (Annex 1). 1. OPENING SESSION The meeting was inaugurated by His Excellency Lt General Khin Nyunt, Chairman of the National Health Committee and Sccrctary-1 of the State Law and Order Restoration Council, Myanmar. In his inaugural spccch, Lt Gen Khin Nyunt expressed his great pleasure in addressing those present and welcomcd the participants to Myanmar. He noted that one of the important principles in Myanmar is the guarantee of equal rights for men and women, and that womcn in Myanmar are safeguarded in matrimony, inheritance and society.
