Excerpt: During 1999 U.S. attorneys evaluated for prosecution 38,288 persons referred by Federal law enforcement agencies and who were suspected of drug offenses. Thirty-one percent of these suspects were involved with marijuana; 28%, with cocaine powder; 15%, crack cocaine; 15%, methamphetamine; 7%, opiates; and 3%, other drugs.
