Excerpt
The Programme's global strategy for TB control is based on the ability of NTPs to quickly identify and cure newly infectious TB patients. Without reliable supply of affordable drugs of assured quality, the strategy cannot be successful. Although total drug expenditures are likely to increase with revitalization of global control efforts, they will evsntually decline because treatment interrupts transmission, ulcirnately leading to fewer new cases requiring treatment. Currently, acute and chronic drug shortages affect a large number of NTPs, while others cannot extend the use of short-course chemotherapy for lack of resources.
