Excerpt
All types of Brucella can infect human beings as well as animals. Generally speaking, Br. melitensis is considered to be the agent responsible for ovine and caprine brucellosis, Br. abortus for bovine brucellosis, and Br. suis for porcine brucellosis. Actually, infection of any species of animal by any type of Brucella is frequent, and one can say, in effect, that the specific relationship of Brucella types to animals does not exactly correspond. This is particularly true for cows, which, in a number of countries, may be infected with brucellosis of Br. nzelitensis or Br. suis origin. Other species of animals, in addition to those mentioned above, may also be infected ; horses, camels, rabbits, hares, chamois: and deer, for example. Infected wild animals may possibly play the role of a reservoir and disseminator of brucellosis. Thus, human brucellosis appears as an '' accident in the natural history of the brucellae, which are essentially responsible for the disease in animals.
