Excerpt
INTRODUCTION The WHO Expert Committee on Water Pollution Control met in Geneva from 6 to 12 April 1965. Dr P. Dorolle, Deputy Director-General, opened the meeting on behalf of the Director-General. The Committee elected Mr Harry G. Hanson as Chairman and Dr A. Key as Rapporteur. Because water pollution is caused by the activities of mankind, it is natural that it should manifest itself to the greatest extent where the density of population and degree of industrialization are greatest. The Committee was therefore appointed to review the most important problems of waterpollution control in such areas and to advise on appropriate corrective measures ; to evaluate progress and trends in measures for the control of water pollution, including new problems of pollution created in developing countries where urbanization and industrialization are rapidly increasing ; to identify broad areas where there is a need for investigation and research into the scientific, technical, economic, social and administrative aspects of such problems ; and to formulate recommendations for national and international action.
