Excerpt
For the panel?s analyses, access to drinking water is coded in three categories: (1) water delivered through in-residence pipes or an in-residence well, the latter accounting for a small proportion of cases; or (2) water available not in the home, but in the neighborhood, usually via standpipes or neighborhood wells, but including cases in which water is purchased from vendors and tanker trucks; or (3) water drawn from other sources, such as from open streams and rainwater. These access measures are meant to represent the household?s main water source, and only one response per household is recorded in a DHS interview. No data are available from DHS surveys on water costs, the variability of water supply, or perceived levels of contamination. In addition, many countries have fielded a question on the time required to fetch water and return. This indicator is presumably sensitive to congestion (waiting) costs as well as to the distance of the household from its main water source. In the following tables, the time to water variable is examined only for the households that lack in-home connections.
