Excerpt: I want to first make it clear for the record, this hearing has been set for at least 30, if not 45 days. It is an annual presentation to the committee on the state of intelligence and the future of intelligence in the world. So it just is a coincidence it is being done at the same time as the Ames situation. It was scheduled way beforehand. So I want to make that clear for the record. I have an opening statement. Then I will yield to Mr. Combest. I am pleased to welcome the Director of Central Intelligence, Jim Woolsey, to the Committee this afternoon to address the current state of intelli ence md its future direction. I might say parenthetically he a as cooperated with this committee with respect for our desire to continue the openness of the process of the intelligence community; and while we have had some disagreements on some of the legislative items, I have the highest praise for his desire to want to be as open as possible about the future of the intelligence community. He should be commended for that. Today's open hearing serves as a starting point for a series of hearings the Committee will hold in the next two months which will examine in great detail the National Foreign Intelligence Program and the Tactical Intelligence and Related Activities of the Department of Defense, the two parts of the intelligence budget.
