Excerpt
Foreword A few words of explanation appear to be required with respect to this compilation of the seven published papers that resulted fiom the THELEP controlled clinical trials of combined chemotherapy of lepromatous leprosy in Bamako, Mali, and Chingleput, South India. In the course of the trials, the resulting data were received and stored in the order in which they were reported. And, in fact, this was a long process: the first patient was recruited in August 1977 and the last in December 1983. Because the duration of treatment was two years, the patients recruited earliest had completed treatment, and the results of the attempt to detect persisting Mycobacterium leprae afler 24 months of treatment, a technique that required a minimum of one year from the moment the biopsy-specimen was received in London, were already available before the last patients had even been recruited. As a consequence, important data were recognised and published in what may now appear an illogical order. Therefore, the order in which the papers are presented in this compilation differs fiom the chronological order of their appearance in Leprosy Review.
