Excerpt: In a general sense, we can say that the science of statistics attempts to quantify our uncertainty about the outcome of an experiment or test. Before we conduct an experiment, we are aware of’ the possible outcomes, but we are not sure which of the outcomes will actually result. The mathematical model, a logical extension of our assumptions about the experiment, quantifies our uncertainty and provides us with a tool for analysis of the outcome.
