Excerpt
Introduction S G 0 Johansson This Interim Report is a short consultative document produced from a collaborative project between the International Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology-World Allergy Organisation (IAACI-WAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The Interim Report is the forerunner of the final document 'Prevention of Allergy and Asthma', which will take the form of a WHO Technical Report. Background The prevalence of asthma and allergy is increasing. It is estimated that over 40% of the world population is atopic. Asthma occurs in around 10-1 5% in the paediatric population and is estimated to affect between 100 and 150 million people worldwide, placing an enormous strain on health resources in many countries. Asthma is a major cause of hospitalisations for chronic diseases in children in the western world.
