As of 3 1 December 1986, a total of 4 549 cases of AIDS had been rewrted by the 27 countries participating in the surveillance of A~DSin the WHO ~uro~ean-~egiaoll-n2;7 countnes have now reported at least 1 case (Table 1). Twenty-six ofthe countnes which participated at the end ofSeptember 1986,' have now reported 814 new cases altogether, 1.e. an average of63 new cases per week The greatest increases were observed in France (171 new cases), Italy (1 56 new cases), the Federal Republic of Germany (1 5 1 new cases), the United Kingdom (98 new cases), and Span (63 new cases). For the 2 1 countries which were particlpatlng m AIDS surveillance in Europe at the end of December 1985,' the cumulative total increased from 2 006 in December 1985 to 4 502 in December 1986, an increase of 124%. In the 12-month period September 1985-September 1986, the increase was 132%.
