Excerpt
Lo persons with the AIDS disease or in those ill with the AIDSrelated complex, important neurological and psychiatric clinical conditions have been recognized to occur. In some cases these conditions have been linked to effects of the AIDS virus (human ~mmunodefic~encvyir us-HIV Type I) m the brain and nervous system. As a result, concern has been expressed about whether persons infected wlth HIV who are otherwise healthy might experience difficulties in neuropsychological function. A May consultation (14-17 March 1988) was convened m Geneva by the WHO Global Programme on AIDS and the Divislon of Mental Health to examine currently available scientific and medical data on the neuropsychological effects of RIV infecuon, with particular anenuon to HIV-infected but otherwse healthy inhviduals. In order to revlew the broad range of issues mvolved, 48 experts from 17 counules anended this meeung, representing the disciplines of neurology, psychiatry, psychology, neurobiology, epidemology, soclal work, occupational health, ethics, clirucal research, and health pokcy.
