United States of America. Ffnal mortaliq data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), indicate that in 1988 dearhs in the United States accounted for 12 276 554 potential years of life lost before age 65 (PYLL) (Table 1) - a total consistent with provisional data reported previously. Provisional data Indicate that for 1989 there were 12 370 499 PYLL. From 1988 to 1989, the PYLL rate for United States residents of all ages decreased by 0.2%, from 4 994 PYLL per 100 000 persons to 4 983 per 100 000, respectively. In 1989, unintentional injuries remained the leading cause of PYLL (18O), followed by cancers at all sites (15%), made and homicide (12D/o), diseases of the heart (11%), congenital anomalies YO), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infectionlacquired ~mmunoddiciency syndrome (AIDS) (5%).
