Excerpt
Since late 1989, several mvestigators in developed countries : have independently reported cases of unexplained severe immunosuppression without evidence of infection with either of the human immunodeficiency wuses (HIV-1 and HIV-2). These cases have been reported from Australia, I Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Some of these, along with some previously unreported cases, were described at the Vmth International Conference on AIDSLIhd STD World Congress m Amsterdam m July 1993.' A feature common to most was the depletion of CD4+ T-lymphocytes. None of the parients involved were known at that rime to have evldence of underlyng dsease processes or therapies associated wrth T-cell depletion. During the same conference, preliminary data were presented on virus-like particles, different fi-om HIV-1 and HIV-2, which were reportedly present in a very small number of these patients.
