Excerpt
Middle South Asia Overall, the number of malaria cases reported increased from 2.1 million in 1990 to 2.7 million in 1992. These figures are strongly influenced by the figures from India, which represent about 80% of all cases recorded. The true malaria incidence is about 6-7 times hgher on the basis of conservative estimates. Forest-related malaria remains a serious problem, wth nearly half of the total number of cases and more than half of all falciparum malana. The exploitation of natural resources renders forests more accessible; movements of populations with low immunity lnta such areas result in malana epidemics.
